  1. Tama Superstar Limited Edition Classic Rocj

Like Thunder, in a good way. I thought it might be too much on some ballads etc. Instead, even on the softer material the bass drum blended well with the bass. I can only describe it as a musical note. Less thump, more boom. It sounded really good! Lot's of compliments from the sound crew and other musicians. The promoter said that he had been listening to drums play all day long and this was the best he had heard. Like Thunder, in a good way. The head of the sound crew thanked me for porting the kick. He said that he has to work with zep tribute bands and all he can do when they show up with an unported 26 is to stick a 57 in front of it and hope for the best. He didn't ask for any additional muffling. He did a good job with it.
  2. Tama Superstar Limited Edition Classic Rocj

    Yep, I ported it.
  3. Sound Man Kick Port battle anticipated

The Beau Taylor Band is opening for Jamey Richards. His drummer is a powerhouse. (North Texas State 1:00 Lab band.) I sent him a pic of my Tama Bonhamesque kit with a 26" bass drum. He owns a Yamaha Oak Custom. He floored me, he said "Can we play your kit Saturday night"? I said, "Well, the bass drum is unmuffled and not ported" He said "Well then, the sound man had better know what he's doing then." He said he would bring his snare and cymbals. I hope we don't tick everyone else in our bands off with our mutual "Bonzo Bass drum" love. He said he loves that sound of double headed big bass drums. Should I port the head? I have other kits with ported heads. He want's to play this one. I don't really want to port it. I may be headed for WWIII with the sound man. My strategy is "He's the headliner! He wanted it that way." LOL

  5. Dw acrylic kits

I have one of the DW design acrylic sets. I had to ship my 12" tom back to them as it began crazing (cracking internally) Acrylic is finicky stuff it has to be removed from the mold at a certain temp etc. Took two weeks, DW sent me a replacement. They sound and look great. I don't play them out much as I'm concerned about their durability and they are heavy to carry. Pearl has been having trouble with their kits cracking around the floor tom mounts. No one guarantees acrylic drums for more than two years. They sound fantastic, look crazy cool. You have to baby them though.
  6. Bass Drum Depth vs. Diameter

Found the problem, the reso is like a diplomat rather than an ambassador on the Tama. The reso on the Mapex is ambassador weight.
  7. Bass Drum Depth vs. Diameter

Drivers seat,. striking each with a beater just off center
  8. Bass Drum Depth vs. Diameter

I'm starting to think it's the good old walnut plies in the Saturn! LOL
  9. Bass Drum Depth vs. Diameter

I have a stock eq3 on the Superstar and an emad with muffle ring removed on the Saturn. That's also a factor!
  10. Bass Drum Depth vs. Diameter

I tried a little experiment today. I lined up my Tama Superstar Maple 14x26" bass drum next to my Mapex Saturn 18x24" kick and tuned each to the same tension with the drum dial. 75 batter and reso. I was not surprised to discover that while playing softly the 14x26" was deeper than the 18x24 kick. I was surprised to find out that when struck loudly the 18x24 was noticeably lower in pitch than the 26. Any physics experts out there care to explain? I had always heard that diameter affects pitch. Depth only affects tone. This experiment seems to contradict this thought. Could be the walnut in the Saturn??
  11. Tama Superstar Limited Edition Classic Rocj

Let me explain why I think this was a great buy for me. I was looking for something lighter than the usual Bonzo set up. (thin shells, 1.6 hoops) I was looking for a wrap finish. Value for dollar, The only other candidates were, Ludwig Centennial Zep set (1200.00 Lacquer finish) DDrum Reflex Bombadier (Alder Shells, very soft wood, cheap looking lugs, poor reputation for bearing edges) (999.00 Buy Used. (Good luck in those sizes) The Tama, 799.00 Maple Shells, Wrap, Lighweight (for it's size) Everything I was looking for! I can save my Saturn with the 24" for special occasions. LOL I call it "The Orange Bonham Special". LOL
  12. Just landed a great gig!

He has a big following over there. I heard he went to play in Brazil with the new band and the crowd was shouting "Hair of The Dog" He hadn't showed the band any of the old Nazareth material and it was a disaster when they tried to play "Hair of The Dog". The bass player thought he was playing "Day Tripper."
  13. Tama Superstar Limited Edition Classic Rocj

I'll take some pics at the gig this wknd. It amazes me what you can get at this price range these days
  14. Just landed a great gig!
