9 questions to get to know you better

Recommended Posts

I joined this forum a few days ago and have been looking around and I thought that I should introduce myself more formally I suppose but also use this thread to get to know each member better. Here it is:

1. Whats your name?

2. Where do you live approximately

3. What do you do for a living? and what are your other hobbies?

4. How long have you been playing drums and any other instruments?

5. What drums have you previously and currently own?

6. What cymbals do you use?

7. Whats your most preferred brand of hardware(pedals, stands, racks, etc.)

8. Do you play in a band or gig?

9. Whats your most prized music accomplishment

feel free to add more.

I'll start:

1. My name is Steve

2. I live in New Jersey

3. I'm a student. Play paintball, and baseball and soccer year round on travel teams. fun fun.

4.I've been playing drums for 3 years. Started because it was always something I wanted to do and I got hooked. Played saxophone for 7 years. and I can play a little guitar due to boredom over a friends' houses from time to time when drums weren't an option.

5. I own a Pacific set right now but in the next few days my Pro-M's should be coming in!! Will have a 10,12,13,16 toms. 12x7 black panther, 14x5.5 snare and 22x18 bass.

6. Right now I currently own Sabians and one zildjian cymbal although I'm opened to anything. 18" AAX dark crash, 16" AAX AAxplosions, 10" AAX splash, B8 ride and hi-hats, 16" ZIldjian oriental trash china.

7. I have an Iron Cobra double pedal. I use a pearl Icon rack and stands don't really matter to my because of my rack. I like Pearl hardware the best although really anything will work as long as it doesn't break.

8. I'm in band called Special Effect. We're in the process of recording our first cd. We gig occasionally, last gig was December 8th.

9. I'm able to jam with just about anyone. My band played paradigm shift at a show when looking back we thought that it would take years to be able to do it. But I've discovered its actually an easier song. ha. Now I know I'm off to accomplish bigger and better.

Good idea Steve.  Here's me:

1) My name is Mark

2) I live in Miami, FL

3) I play drums for a living and also enjoy working out.

4) Been playing drums for 12 years.

5) I have been playing my Pro M drums for the last 6 years and LOVE them. I have a variety of snare drums from Mapex, Pearl, Pork Pie and Metro (Australia).

6) I use a bunch of Sabian, Zildjian and Meinl cymbals.  Definitely a gearhead.

7) I use whatever hardware seems best when I'm buying it.  I've got a stand or something from probably every company.

8) I play 4 nights a week in a cover band, back up Cloud 9, an original hip hop group, and play with an original rock band.  I also play in several ensembles at the University of Miami, where I'm studying drums.

9) I'm most proud of the last Cloud 9 show, where I got to play to a sold out crowd of about 1,500 in the biggest club on South Beach.  Such an awesome feeling.  I hope there's much more to come.

1. Whats your name? Mike

2. Where do you live approximately? Pompano Beach, FL (South Florida)

3. What do you do for a living? and what are your other hobbies? I work at a professional photo lab in my spare time. I'm a full time student at FAU. I swim and substitute coach for a local swim club and I like to play with my cars (everything from Hotwheels to the Ranger).

4. How long have you been playing drums and any other instruments? I've been playing drums for 9 years and I've been trying to teach myself guitar for a couple years now...I'll get there eventually.

5. What drums have you previously and currently own? I sold my 1998 Mapex Mars Pro 5-piece (my second set) to get a 2001 Tama Rockstar 10-piece (my third set which I'm sellling to get another Mapex) and I have a early-mid 1990s Mapex Mars set (my fourth set I'm also selling for a new Mapex). My first set is a 1967 (or older) Premier pre-international sized 4-piece which I'm restoring so I can keep rocking out on it.

EDIT 1/27/08: Tamas are sold and I've got most my new VX 8-piece in.

6. What cymbals do you use? Zildjian, Sabian and a 9" LP bell...mostly used stuff.

7. Whats your most preferred brand of hardware(pedals, stands, racks, etc.)? Axis pedals. I've only used Tama and Mapex hardware (except for the Axis and Ludwi snare stands that are now dead) and I've had good luck with their stuff, but I prefer the Mapex tom mountg hardware over everyone else's by far.

8. Do you play in a band or gig? I'm in an experimental electronica band with me on acoustic drums. I'm also in an alternative rock/cover band with an old friend. And I've got two metal bands on hold until I get my new double bass Mapex kit.

9. Whats your most prized music accomplishment? I don't feel that I've really accomplished anything musically yet, but most people are impressed with the fact that I played percussion in my high school's production of West Side Story. I was the only non-hired musician (because the forgot to hire someone for that spot) and I only messed up once, which is good considering I can't read music...no, it wasn't anywhere near as good as Buddy Rich's version.

Prior to that I played piano and violin (at my parent's request, as drums were too loud)... gave them up as soon as I could.

5. What drums have you previously and currently own? I own a Saturn fusion set at the moment, my first kit. Luckily all the places I work at have drum kits (i.e. schools), so I didn't need to buy one until I had saved up enough.

6. What cymbals do you use? Paiste Dark Energy - fell in love with them on a trip to the UK last Xmas, and had to have 5 of them.

7. Whats your most preferred brand of hardware(pedals, stands, racks, etc.)? Got a Yamaha double pedal and hi-hat, recommended them by other drummers, and they've been great so far. Otherwise it's Mapex all the way.

8. Do you play in a band or gig? I'm in a semi-band. Myself and the 2 music teachers from school jam once a week, and we have performed for the students, and busked in local towns fundraising. I am determined to step this up next year and perform! The school is having a musical, which I will be hopefully drumming for (can't see any of the students being able to do it).

9. Whats your most prized music accomplishment? Still enjoying playing drums every day.

1. Whats your name?      Ken

2. Where do you live approximately     Mobile, Alabama (approximately)

3. What do you do for a living? and what are your other hobbies?     Service Engineer for Radiation Therapy department at a local hospital. Between work, music and life, I don't have time for too much else.

4. How long have you been playing drums and any other instruments?     I started playing at 12 (lessons and all), played through the end high school in their various bands. I played set for the last two years of high school (no lessons), and stopped playing when I joined the Navy (they wouldn't let me bring drums). I had fooled around with accoustic guitar for a couple of years, so I started playing that more often (easier to get onto the submarine). I did get to jam on drums with a few folks throughout the Naval period, not often enough. I sat behind a set and played during a sound check at a friend's bar/studio grand opening a couple of years ago and got bit...HARD. I HAD to start playing again, got a set of Swingstars really quick and started playing with folks. If my math is right, that makes about 8 years. I'm on my second band now and I'm having a blast.

5. What drums have you previously and currently own?     A White Marine Pearl 3-piece Kent in high school, a Gunmetal TAMA Swingstar that has been severely upgraded when I got bitten and reborn, and my recent baby is the Caramel Fade Pro M. I still use the TAMA as my outdoor gigging set.

6. What cymbals do you use?      Wuhan S Series and China were my first upgrades to the Swingstar set, Sabian AAX's with a HHX and HH effects cymbals added for the Pro M's. I also have a Meinl Kenny Aronoff hammered cowbell (very cool sounding - piercing even), two tones of jam blocks, and a set of Treeworks windchimes along with a tamborine ring on the hi-hat rod.

7. Whats your most preferred brand of hardware(pedals, stands, racks, etc.)     I started with TAMA and Gibraltar and got used to that feel, Iron Cobra double pedal and Hi-Hat. I was very impressed with the Mapex hardware that came with the Pro M, also.

8. Do you play in a band or gig?    Yes to the first, working on the second. We've played out, but not what I'd call a real gig yet. We're doing a freebee for a party later this month and expect we should be doing enough material after that where we can do some serious playing.

9. Whats your most prized music accomplishment?     Playing with the people I'm with now has been phenomenal. We're playing the guitarist's material and only a couple of covers (he's kind of a mix between Eric Johnson, Steve Morse, Satriani, but his own style dominates) - and the bass player (the guy that threw the bar/studio party that got me restarted) I've been wanting to play music with ever since I've known him. I still pinch myself and wonder how I ever got to be playing with these folks. If we go nowhere, I will still treasure this. I think my most prized musical accomplishment is yet to come, but so far, this is it.

1. Whats your name? Matt

2. Where do you live approximately? just outside of Myrtle Beach, SC

3. What do you do for a living? and what are your other hobbies? i'm a water meter reader (yeah I know, but it pays good) I'm a mustang freak - a born & raised gear head.

4. How long have you been playing drums and any other instruments? I've been playing drums since I was 3 years old. I can also run sound, lights, video.

5. What drums have you previously and currently own? I started with some pots, pans & wooden spoons, then my parents bought me a Dixon starter kit - snare/kick/tom/cymbal - all mounted to the kick, then I got a Mapex Venus series 5pc kit. I just bought my M-Birch kit in my sig - which is by far, my favorite kit I've played on. I played Tama Swingstars at the old sanctuary, when we built the new building, the church bought a Roland TD-20 Vdrum kit.

6. What cymbals do you use? sabian

7. Whats your most preferred brand of hardware(pedals, stands, racks, etc.) I like all the mapex, tama, dw, gibraltar hardware, but, If I had to pick one brand to buy everything from, it'd be tama - mainly because of the pedals. I do plan on buying a gibraltar rack unless mapex comes out with one. Most of the DW stuff is too expensive for my budget however.

8. Do you play in a band or gig? both

9. Whats your most prized music accomplishment - getting to my current level of skill with no lessons - completely self taught.

NeedForSpeed's Form :

I joined this forum a few days ago and have been looking around and I thought that I should introduce myself more formally I suppose but also use this thread to get to know each member better. Here it is:

1. Whats your name?

AncientGas { Heh-heh-heh ... }

Actually it's Randy.

2. Where do you live approximately

I live in Peoria, Arizona USA.  Our home is about 21 miles northwest of Phoenix.

3. What do you do for a living? and what are your other hobbies?

I'm not a salesman, per se, but I work in sales.

My hobbies : I fart around on the Internet, and do a lot of reading of books, 'Net articles, odd-ball things really.  I enjoy football (watching, of course - College as well as pro), auto racing (mostly road racing) .

4. How long have you been playing drums and any other instruments?

My parents made me learn some piano at an early age .  I began learning the drums at 12, but I stopped playing after 21 years.  I'm working my way back, now.  I played for 21 or 22 years for sure; don't know how to answer.

5. What drums have you previously and currently own?

Old, old Pearl (when they were practically throw-aways in 1965 - a 3-piece); Gretsch Maple 4-piece; Slingerland 7-piece; now Mapex Saturn Studio.  Played a few kits that were obtained for me by a couple bands, although they retained ownership (Blue-oyster Ludwig 5-piece in 1968 and a Black Yamaha Recording Custom 6-piece in 1985).

6. What cymbals do you use?

Now, Paiste 2oo2's with a Giant Beat crash/ride.  Previously, Zildjian with a Swiss-made off-brand (not Paiste).

7. Whats your most preferred brand of hardware(pedals, stands, racks, etc.)

Good double-braced hardware - each brand has some good feature. The best Pedals I've played were Ghost Pedals back in the 70's (light, quick, comfortable feel). Had a great Rogers pedal.  Premier 6000 Hat stand.  My Mapex 750 Hat stand is quite good. Played Yamaha hardware with the Recording Custom kit except a Tama Double-pedal (pre-dated the Iron Cobra. Did not like this pedal).

8. Do you play in a band or gig?

Not now; but over the years I must've played in 50 bands lasting anywhere from a week to a couple years per band over a 20-year span.

9. Whats your most prized music accomplishment

Three or four come to mind; too detailed to include.  I played in four notable situations quite awhile apart where the audience numbered between 1500 to 3500.  Each of the bands were jazzed to play for those audiences, which were larger than any of our usual audiences, and that was very, very cool; but the big deal was the supportive audience reception. Very heartwarming that people would so easily show their appreciation.  Really gratifying.

feel free to add more.

Okay, thank you :  The music I've played was overwhelmingly Cover stuff.  Most audiences we've played for would be nice and listen to our original material, but would really react to the cover stuff.  I don't know what I liked better:  I really got jazzed to see people react to the covers; but I also really liked writing lyrics to original music that my bandmates and I wrote.

I played everything from the Allman Bros to the Yardbirds and Zombies (1 song) ; folk, jazz, progressive rock, some really short portions of classical movements, swing-era, blues.  No polkas though :)

4. How long have you been playing drums and any other instruments? Drums was my first instrument! I started around 11 years ago. I didn't take it seriously for the first couple of years though. I've recently been learning piano and guitar.

5. What drums have you previously and currently own? My first kit...boxes! haha. After that my first real kit wasn't far off from boxes! I first owned a Baxter kit from the local pawn shop (my folks thought drumming would be a "phaze")! I Bought my Pearl's a few years after that, and now my Orion's!

6. What cymbals do you use? Mostly Sabian, if I could I would have all Sabian! But there's no reason to ditch my remaining two Zildjians!

7. Whats your most preferred brand of hardware(pedals, stands, racks, etc.) I use Iron Cobra pedals, although I've recently played DW's and have found my appreciation for them rekindled! Stands, I've found both Mapex and Pearl to have quality products. I can tell you what I dont't like! Gibralter, Tama, etc...

8. Do you play in a band or gig? A little of everything? Band, jams, gigs, session

9. Whats your most prized music accomplishment? Teaching at a young age. Playing my first show and having young fans standing there jaws dropped, waiting to chat! Recording a music vid! Recording in general! Becoming a signed artist (Epek) for my snare drum!!!

And of course...being a part of the PHENOMINAL community!

1. Whats your name?

 Marc

2. Where do you live approximately

 Edmonton, Ab, Canada

3. What do you do for a living? and what are your other hobbies?

I work at Certified Radio as an installer http://www.certifiedradio.ca/

I enjoy playing Halo2 online(not so much now, too busy), I also help out at a local open stage saturday nights, with sound and sometimes my kit goes.

Me and a friend are also creating a web site dedicated to the local music scene here in Edmonton, it will potentially have many venues, bands, bst's, musicians looking for bands, bands looking for musicians, rentals, online resume's, ect... But it is a huge undertaking, eats up alot of time, but hopefully worth it in the end!

4. How long have you been playing drums and any other instruments?

I have been playing the second time around for about a year and a half, but previously played in a band called Lagerhead/brainshake, now known as FUGR, also i played very little rythm guitar previously, and just picked up a Epiphone Special II to piss around with.

5. What drums have you previously and currently own?

At first, i second Ty, boxes, then old rogers with ludwig hardware, then a blue set of tama's, and now my Maped M's in Natural Gloss.

6. What cymbals do you use?

This is where i might get bugged a bit...  Roland, and the only reason is my house is a duplex, and i don't have a sound proof room, but my preference would be Sabian AAX stage and studio, for main, and a mix of others for effects...

7. Whats your most preferred brand of hardware(pedals, stands, racks, etc.)

Gibraltar for rack, then for booms and such, no real prefference, i haven't used a bad brand yet.  Pedals pref would be Trick, but use DW.

8. Do you play in a band or gig?

As i stated above, i help out at an open stage,  and play once in a while, but i am aspiring to be in or create a Rob/White Zombie cover band(tributes of sorts), can't get by the styles, and energy of Rob and his group...

9. Whats your most prized music accomplishment

This would have been one of two shows i did with my previous band, a battle of the bands in Winnepeg that we place 9th out of 26, or a Canada day gig in Brandon with near 3500-4000 (personally my biggest)people in the crowd, just for the rush of it....  Also we did a demo, that was cool too.

Good idea. I've not been on the board for a quite long time, so I think many people have joined the community I don't know yet.

1. My name's Matthias (well...)

2. I'm Swiss and I live in Winterthur, which is about 20min from Zurich.

3. I'm 24 and studying drums. I teach, I have some students, but I want to increase the teaching amount.

4. I've been drumming for about 10 years I think, but not always seriously. I also play the bass and the piano. For several years, too. And a bit of guitar.

5. I've been always been a Mapex guy until now. I mean, I know other brands and have played many sets, but I own Mapex. Currently a quite new Orion coffee burst set:drool:, 10,12,14x14 and 16x16toms, 22 bass drum, and a black panther 14x5.5 snare.

Check out http://www.centerstagem.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=146&page=1! Some old pictures, without the cymbals though.

6. I play Sabian HHX cymbals, on my set there is a 16 stage crash, an 18 xtreme crash, an 18 o-zone crash, a 10 splash, 14 evolution hats and a 21 groove ride. Great setup!!

7. I'm quite happy with my Mapex hardware, my Pearl Eliminator double pedals, my pearl cowbells and footbell-mounter, as well as with my Hardware cases and my Sabian cymbal bag.

8. I play in a rockband, have a jazz trio, some bands at school, and I always have some other projects going on. My musical goal is to be the most versatile possible, to be able to play many styles, and to get many different gigs. I love so many different music styles, and all of them are related to each other anyway. So in a way that makes me kind of a fusion guy I think.

I've been playing the drums off and on (mostly off) for 20+ years.

5. What drums have you previously and currently own?

My first kit was a 5-piece Rogers in Blue Sparkle Wrap. Then I had an 8-piece double bass CB percussion kit in Black Gloss Wrap. I sold that one when I went in the military and when I got out of the military, I got a top of the line (at the time) Roland V-Drums kit. I sold off that kit a couple of years ago and have been without since. By the end of the year, my goal is to have a new set of Saturns in Galaxy Burst in the configuration listed in my signature! :drum2:

1. Whats your name?

Yanick

2. Where do you live approximately

Joliette (50 min. north of Montreal) Canada

3. What do you do for a living? and what are your other hobbies?

I run a signshop since '89. 80 hours/week don't allow me the real good times needed to do something else:mad: nevertheless, I find some times for playing drums and riding my motorcycle. I love my job "just a li'l too much"...

4. How long have you been playing drums and any other instruments?

Drums for 21 years and bass 13 years (self-taugh, very basic... for my own pleasure)

5. What drums have you previously and currently own?

I first rent a 5 pces. Rogers (Gold Sparkles) to learn playing drum during summer of '86, next I bought a used 5 pces. Baxter (Piano Black)and after 3 years, I bought a brand new 9 pces. Pearl Export (Smokey Chrome). 18 years later, after beating the hell out of it, I sold it and get a new custom-made "à la carte" 7 pces. Mapex Orion (Cinnamon fade)

6. What cymbals do you use?

Mostly Sabian (AAX - Paragon), 2 Zildjian and Wuhan (China)

7. Whats your most preferred brand of hardware(pedals, stands, racks, etc.)

Pearl Eliminator twin-pedals, Mapex stands and tom holders, RocNSoc hydraulic throne

8. Do you play in a band or gig?

Unfortunately not but I really want to. 'Only have to find people with similar tastes and start the wheel (if you don't tell anyone you're looking for friends to gig, nobody will come knocking at my door, seeking for a drummer:rolleyes: )

9. Whats your most prized music accomplishment

Please don't laugh but I'm a self-taugh so every li'l things I'm mastering now is an accomplishment for me (i.e. keeping tempo by clapping the hi-hat while my arms and 2nd foot are doing something else (beat / fills). Other than that, still to come...

-Side note: My sister-in-law was amazed by me when I was playing drums so she asked me if she can give it a try. She played for 15 min. and was hooked! I was looking for a li'l gift for his birthday few weeks ago but didn't find until I got this genious idea! I bought her a VicFirth practice pad, a pair of VicFirth 7A nylon and a book (Drum lessons). She was SO happy, I would had gave her a $100 bill she wouldn't been happier:apimp: My brother swear she practice over an hour/day. 'Just hope she won't get better than me the 1st year:rolleyes:
